Your hobby : sport events.
Our mission: to contribute to the biggest international market sports of 2012: Sportel Rio.
When: January, from the 12th to the 14th.

Sportel was created thanks to the initiative of Georges Bertellotti, a Monegasque journalist and avid sportsman. Let’s quote him: « …in spite of our efforts, we have not exhausted the multiples facets of this organization …for sport opens to life and life, in order to enrich sport, needs the humility that drives us to constantly challenge our views, achievements and knowledge ».

Georges Bertellotti used to have strong links with the governement by passing informations from the press to the politics for more than thirty years, thus he decided to create a huge sport event. He gave birth to Sportel, which is now the world’s leading business market for the sport and media industry.

France beats out rivals Italy, Turkey and Poland for the right to host one of soccer’s main events

France will be the host country of the 2016 European football championship. France squeaked by Turkey by one narrow vote, as well as Italy and Poland for the coveted chance to host one of the world’s biggest and more prestigious sporting events, 18 years after its 1998 hosting — and winning– the World Cup. Poland and esp[ecially Turkey submitted very ambitious plans that included massive infrastructure upgrades, but in the end it was the more sensible and modest bid of France that won the day. France was able to rely on the quality of its existing infrastructure, notably with regard to its public transport system and well-developed security.

New upgrades, new jobs

But the win means more than bragging rights for host country France. A lot of money is involved, with billions pledged to upgrade France’s stadiums, and tens of thousands of new jobs associated with the reconstruction projects across the country. The 2016 event will be the first European championship to include 24 countries, compared to the 16 nations taking part in previous Euro tournaments. In order to properly accommodate the new arrivals to the field, France will need to reexamine some key parts of its winning dossier. Despite their success in winning over the judges, UEFA still criticized the French football authorities on the antiquated state of many French stadiums.

Football event a kick in the pants for an ailing European economy, says Sarkozy

Repairing the structures will allow for the creation of some 15,000 temporary jobs and another 4,000 permanent positions to ensure they are in top shape for 2016. A few minutes before the judges began their deliberations, French President Nicolas Sarkozy was invited to speak at the end of France’s presentation. Sarkozy spoke of the need to make Euro 2016 part of the “solution to the (economic) crisis” plaguing many of the competing countries. In any case, today’s win should give French football clubs the chance to build new sports venues. And the results should be tangible: more spectators, more revenue.

Three female surf lifesaving champions from France, Stephanie Geyer-Barneix, 34, Alexandra Lux, 23, and Flora Manciet, 25, set off from Capbredon in southwest France, near Bordeaux on July 5, in an attempt to traverse the Atlantic. They are using only the boards they use in their lifesaving duties, with their arms as propellers. The crossing is a relay, with a boat accompanying the women carrying supplies and communication equipment.

With each woman paddling for two hours, four times a day since they left, on August 5th, a month into their journey, they were halfway to their destination, sister city Cape Breton in Canada. The voyage, which the women have dubbed “Cap Odyssey” carries no prize except that of personal accomplishment. The challenge has been two years in the planning, and that is only the beginning. The women risk danger from exposure, rough seas, sharks, boat traffic and simply getting lost at sea in the dark. The catamaran that is accompanying them must reduce its speed to and almost impossible snail’s pace to stay abreat of the paddlers, who can cover only about 60 miles in 24 hours.

With nowhere to store any gear, the women are equipped with the bare minimum, including dry-suits, an electronic beacon and an emergency flare. The three women have gathered an extensive team, including medical researchers, logistics and aquatics security experts. The onboard crew of five includes an osteopath who will study the physical effects of the journey. Before the race, the women trained with a psychological counselor to prepare themselves mentally to weather the long and arduous journey.

Beleaguered coach Domenech is still in charge, angering many French football fans.

Although it was widely expected that Raymond Domenech would lose his position as coach of France’s beloved football team known as Les Bleus this year after questions about his leadership, his decisions and the dismal performance his team, in July 2008 it was announced Domenech had retained his job. But many in France still protest the unexpected decision.

The outcome of a midsummer Paris meeting between FFF president Jean-Pierre Escalettes and several council members means the 56-year-old Domenech gets a chance to lead Les Bleus to the 2010 World Cup. The FFF president said he did not want to make a knee-jerk decision based on the public outcry that followed France’s collapse in Euro 2008.

The FFF’s vote of confidence in Domenech surprised some and outraged many in France. Despite reaching the finals of the 2006 World Cup, Domenech’s record is not very impressive. His squad selection policy and tactics have long been considered suspect by many football experts. In the Euro 2008 championship, France lost to Scotland twice and barely made their way into Euro 2008. Once in the tournament, two-time European champion France failed to win a match and scored only one goal, in a 4-1 loss to the Netherlands. Domenech had earlier said that he would quit as coach if he failed to qualify for the quarterfinals. But he remains coach of les Bleus.

Even more recently, France lost to Austria for the first time since 1970. The score in that match, held on Septmber 6, was 3-1.

Domenech’s more unorthodox practices are also a cause for dismay among many fans in France and elsewhere. Domenech has admitted reading tarot cards to gauge a player’s personality. He is a student of astrology and avoids selecting Scorpios in his squad. This prompted a falling out with Robert Pires in 2004, which led to Pires’ international retirement. Fans have soured even more on Domenech recently for his hotheaded way of responding to questions, for alienating French players from the fans with closed-door training sessions and for proposing to his TV news anchor girlfriend, Estelle Denis, live on television just moments after the French were eliminated from Euro 2008.

Carlos Sastre became the third Spaniard in a row to win the Tour de France on Sunday. Sastre’s win comes after victories for fellow Spaniards Oscar Pereiro in 2006 and Albert Contador in 2007. Last year’s Spanish winning Astana team was not invited back to the Tour de France this year because of its own doping scandal. Sastre said the three-Spaniard streak was partly due to luck, but also to a national program that encourages young cyclists in Spain.

Cadel Evans of Australia finished second overall, just 58 seconds after Sastre, who unofficially nailed his win Saturday after beating Evans in the time-trial. Austrian Bernhard Kohl was third, one minute 13 seconds behind the lead, also taking the polka dot jersey for the best climber.

Sastre’s win was only a surprise in that he has comes so close so many times without a victory. Despite five finishes in the top 10 of the Tour de France in the last six years, including four victories in mountain stages, Sastre was widely written off as an also-ran who could not attain a big enough lead in the mountains to best other cyclist in the time-trials. In this year’s Tour de France, he proved the naysayers wrong.

It’s been a red-letter year for sports in Spain. In the last seven weeks, Spain has also won the Euro 2008 football tournament and Rafael Nadal clinched a fourth French Open tennis title plus the Wimbledon championship.

Other riders honored in the Tour de France included the German/Austrian winner of the polka-dot jersey, Bernhard Kohl. The polka-dot jersey is awarded for best climber in the Tour de France. Yet another Spaniard, Oscar Freire of the Rabobank team, won the green jersey, called the sprinter’s jersey because it is based on points awarded at stage finishes and intermediate sprints along the Tour de France route. Freire’s victory was something of a vindication for Rabobank, whose Tour hopes ended when the team fired Michael Rasmussen during the final week of the race while he was in the race leader’s yellow jersey. Rasmussen had lied about why he had missed anti-doping tests during training before the Tour de France. The prize for best overall team effort and the white jersey for best young rider under 25 went to CSC-Saxo Bank. Andy Schleck, 23, recorded the best overall time among riders age 25 or under. CSC won the team prize based on finishes of stages of its riders, who hogged the leader’s yellow jersey for 7 out of the 21 days of the Tour de France.

Despite the Spanish winning streak, Spain did not escape the spectre of illegal drug use that has permeated the Tour de France for the past 10 years. An entire Spanish team, Saunier Duval-Scott, withdrew after its Italian team leader and the winner of two stages, Riccardo Riccò, tested positive for a new variant of the blood-boosting drug EPO.

Cycling crown jewel loses its luster as doping continues to compromise the sport in France and around the world.

On the Tour de France, gendarmes are becoming almost as numerous as competitors. An Italian rider who has already won two stages this year, Riccardo Riccò was led away from the start of the 12th stage by French police. He was the third cyclist this year alone to have tested positive for the banned blood-boosting drug EPO. The team he represented in the Tour de France, Saunier Duval-Scott, immediately withdrew from the race. This marks the third year that the Tour de France and cycling as a sport has been marred by doping scandals. And it comes on the heels of another leading cyclist leaving the Tour de France after his team fired him. Michael Rasmussen, the Dane who had been leading the Tour de France in the yellow jersey, was fired by his team. Rasmussen won last Wednesday’s stage and had looked set to win the race, which ends Sunday. He was taken out of the Tour de France by the Rabobank team after questions arose about his whereabouts when he was unavailable for doping exams earlier this year.

As unfavorable as the evidence against him appeared, Rasmussen’s withdrawal came under a mere cloud of suspicion, while Riccò’s disqualification was a result of a real failed drug test. Riccò continues to protest his innocence, saying that the elevated levels of the blood ingredient EPO is meant to boost have been naturally high for him since he was a child. Even if this is true, this does nothing to explain the presence of synthetic EPO markers in the test that knocked him out of the Tour de France midrace.

Riccò’s disqualification marked a grim anniversary for the tour de France. It came on the 10th anniversary of the Festina scandal, when routine doping among cycling teams came to light with the arrest at the 1998 Tour of Festina’s team leader, who was driving a car that was a vertiable pharmacy performance-enhancing drugs.

Desperate to do damage control on the reputation of the Tour de France and the sport of competitive cycling, Christian Prudhomme, the director of the Tour, also warned against condemning cycling as a whole in the wake of the repeated drug scandals. “The enemy is not sports, it is not cycling,” he said. “It is doping.”

Drug scandal mars Tour de France once more; fired Rasmussen leaves the race and others sit out in protest.

The Tour de France has been fighting the spectre of doping rumors and scandals for years. Just when it seemed to be quieting down, Michael Rasmussen, the Dane who was leading the Tour de France in the yellow jersey, was fired by his team. Rasmussen won Wednesday’s stage and had looked set to win the race, which ends Sunday. He was taken out of the Tour de France by the Rabobank team after questions arose about his whereabouts when he was unavailable for doping exams earlier this year. Rasmussen missed random drug tests May 8 and June 28, and stories of his whereabouts at the time did not match up. According to the rules of the Tour de France, evading these tests too many times is equated with failing them. There are other rumors circulating around Rasmussen, whose dismissive attitude has not helped him win the confidence of the Tour de France authorities. One concerned an American mountain biker who had reportedly transported bags of blood for Rasmussen. Blood products are sometimes used illegally by cyclists for performance enhancement.

Cyclists from eight French and German teams sat out the start of stage 16. They said they delayed their start to protest the drug abuse in their sport.

Rasmussen’s thin alibis and arrogance have won him few defenders; his guilt seems almost a given among most observers. Still, since the alleged infractions for which the Danish cyclist was disqualified occurred several months ago, some Tour officials questioned why he was allowed to take the start on July 7 in London in the first place. Now the leader of the Tour who had appeared to be a shoo-in for victory is out of the race, dampening enthusiasm for the Tour de France around the world, and cheating the eventual winner of a good deal of his glory.

In a commercial backlash, sports giant Adidas said it might stop sponsoring bicycling teams, including T-Mobile. The car maker Audi might also withdraw its support for the sport, a German newspaper reported. A spokesman for Volkswagen’s Czech unit Skoda, one of the main sponsors of the Tour de France, said the company would evaluate its four years of sponsorship and then decide whether to continue. It’s becoming clear to more and more companies that cycling is no longer a sport that can be counted on to reflect well on businesses associated with it.

With Rasmussen out of the Tour de France, Spanish rider Alberto Contador of the Discovery Channel team would move into the race lead.

This number rivals that of spain and Germany, also advancing five players.

In Friday’s Wimbledon action, Richard Gasquet, Paul-Henri Mathieu, Gilles Simon and Arnaud Clement joined Marc Gicquel, who had qualified to advance to the next round on Wednesday. 8th seed Richard Gasquet benefited from the forfeit due to injury fifty-four minutes into the match of fellow Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean, who had been leading 2 sets to zero (6-2 6-2). Gasquet credited his relaxed and confident performance on grass to his new trainer, Guillaume Peyre, whom he credited with giving him a “boost.” Richard Gasquet will next face another French rival, 28th-ranked Gilles Simon, who beat Argentina’s Agustin Calleri, 49th in the world, in four sets (5-7 6-2 6-3 6-4). Simon expressed elation at his advancement, and respect for his upcoming opponent, who has beaten him twice.

14th-ranked Paul-Henri Mathieu outclassed his junior compatriot Jeremy Chardy, 108th worldwide, in three set (6-3 7-5 7-6) for his advancement. In the third round, the Frenchman will face Croatian Marin Cilic, who battled through five sets before eliminating the Finn Jarkko Nieminen, number 24 worldwide. The upcoming match will be the fourth time in two months – and the third week in a row on grass – that the two men will clash.

Arnaud Clement, 145th worldwide, dominated German Benjamin Becker, victor over Nikolay Davydenko in the first round in three sets 7-6, 7-6, 6-3. This will be his first appearance in a Grand Slam since the 2005 US Open. Clement will play Austrian Jürgen Melzer, 72nd in the world, for the first time in his career.

The only Frenchwoman in contention on Thursday lost in the second round in two sets 6-3 6-4 against Israeli Shahar Peer.
