Cannes attendance takes hit from gloomy economy, while some films still shine
May 19, 2009
Films from France the UK stand out at the Cannes Festival despite clouds in the sky and on the economic horizon.
Some estimate that attendance at this year’s 62nd Cannes Film Festival is down as much as 30%. So far, the buying by prominent U.S. distributors is down almost 100%. However, although no major sales had been announced by the sixth day of the festival buyers and sellers alike said three well-reviewed Cannes competition movies were starting to attract attention. The best-received competition movie so far has been the French gangster movie “A Prophet” from director Jacques Audiard. The next most popular film is the UK entry “Looking for Eric” a mostly lighthearted story of a British mailman who turns to soccer superstar Eric Cantona for help in his life, especially to repair his fractured relationships with his ex-wife, daughter and two sons. Also form the UK, “The Fish Tank” is a smaller film about a single mother who brings home a new boyfriend, that is nonetheless attracting attention.
American Quentin Tarntino, who first hit Cannes in 1992 with Reservoir Dogs, is back again this festival with Inglorious Bastards, a World War Two drama starring Brad Pitt. On a lighter note, the Cannes Film Festival opened last Wednesday with Pixar’s soaring animated adventure “Up,” complete with 3-D glasses. The film was well-received, and its “uplifting” theme a welcome buoy to the mood of the times. “Up” tells the story of the adventures of a cranky widower and a young scout who fly away in a helium balloon-propelled house. Other notable films screening out of competition are darker, and include Terry Gilliam’s “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”, the anticipated final screen role of the late Heath Ledger (his role had to be completed by Johnny Depp and Jude Law); Sam Raimi’s horror film, “Drag Me to Hell”; and Michel Gondry’s “L’Epine dans le Coeur”.
In competition, members of the jury, led by French actress Isabelle Huppert, will be mulling over which directors from a lineup that includes Pedro Almodovar, Ang Lee, the aforementioned Quentin Tarantino and Ken Loach should receive Cannes’ coveted prizes, and the big one known as the Palme d’Or. Altogether, 20 films will vie for the Palme d’Or, which will be awarded at the festival’s close.
The slate at Cannes looks strong, but the economy is weak, so festival organizers and industry attendees are apprehensive about how the global recession will affect the event. Despite its lavish and glamorous reputation, the global economic crisis, budget cutbacks and a recession mindset have also spread to Cannes, with industry watchers expecting less flash and a more subdued event this year. Vanity Fair magazine has canceled its annual Cannes party, and someparties have swapped champagne for less costly sparkling wine. Off the red carpet, there is a pall over the sprawling festival market where movie deals are done. The deal-making and parties at Cannes will go on, but watchers expect a more subdued mood, and more yachts in the harbor to go unchartered this year.
The Cannes Film Festival closes on May 24 with Jan Kounen’s film Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky.
Eiffel Tower celebrates 120 years as the symbol of Paris
May 16, 2009
France’s most enduring landmark was orignally built as a temporary structure.
Can anyone imagine Paris without the Eiffel Tower? Its planners certainly did. It was scheduled to be torn down no more 20 years after its construction, and many wanted it gone before that. The author Guy de Maupassant ate it its restaurant every day, because it was the only place in Paris where it could not be seen.
But now, 120 years after it was erected for the Paris Expo, the brainchild of Gustave Eiffel, the Eiffel Tower, is celebrating its birthday. The Tower received its 18th paint job for the occasion ( the formula for the disctictive bronze-beige color is a highly guarded secret). Two special exhibitions are being held in Paris. ‘Gustave Eiffel, le magicien du fer’ is on show at the town hall until the end of August and tells the story of the construction of the tower and its creator through a display of photos, paintings, sketches and models. ‘Tales of the Eiffel Tower’ is located on the first floor and the stairs of the Eiffel Tower. It includes a display of posters, photos, illustrations and interactive presentations, which chart the construction of the tower, how it has inspired artists throughout its history and has been replicated and represented throughout the world.
The Eiffel Tower is not only one of the most beloved of national monuments in Europe, it is also among the most visited. As of todayclose to 244 million visitors have hiked up the stairs or taken the elevators. The Tower, erected in 1889 to celebrate the centeinnil of the French Revolution as part of the Paris Expo, drew attention from the outset and never lost it. The attention was not universally positive. Many prominent Parisians detested the “skeleton” structure and demanded its swift deomolition. But Gustave Eiffel defended his construction, declaring that it had a beauty all its own.
When the number of visitors fell after the Expo was over and calls for its detrction mounted, Eiffel decided to turn his construction to profit by exploiting its scientific and commercial potential. A small observation station was installed, then a wireless telegraphy antenna and eventually a television broadcast antenna. These days, visitors to the Tower number 6 million per year.
Protests against economic crisis sweep France
May 15, 2009
Another day of strikes across France expresses public dismay at job losses, cost of living increases
In the latest public slap against French President Nicolas Sarkozy, hundreds of thousands of people across France last Thursday took to the the streets to denounce President Nicolas Sarkozy’s handling of the economic crisis. Estimates of total demonstrators across France topped 1 million people, with some estimates going as high as 3 million.
The protests, which polls showed are backed by three quarters of the French public, reflected a marked loss of confidence in Sarkozy’s pledges of reform.
Around one million civil servants were joined by members of the public on Thursday, with more than 200 protest marches held, officials said, in protest against the government’s handling of the economic crisis.
Thursday’s action, the second in less than two months, is not only a blunt criticism of the policies of Nicolas Sarkozy, but also the latest sign of growing social unrest in France due to the global economic downturn. The crisis has sent the number of jobless past two million and left many people struggling with the high cost of living.
With the cost of living rising, strikers are calling for higher wages, better methods for protecting employment and higher taxes for high earners.“The crisis is not the fault of the workers,” one banner read at the biggest march in Paris, where 85,000 people marched through the city, according to police.Public transport and schools, hospitals and the postal service have been affected by the strikes, which are supported by around 75 per cent of the population, according to opinion polls. About 30 percent of French schoolteachers took part in the strike on Thursday, resulting in disruption of classes all over France. A quarter of employees at France Telecom and one in five postal workers also participated, officials said. Private sector workers also participated in the protests, including employees of Air France and oil company Total.
Paris was the largest hotbed of demonstrations, but there were movements of all sizes all over France. For example in northern France, around 10,000 people protested in Clairoix over the closure of a local tire plant, which has meant a loss of 1,120 jobs.
In a similar day of action at the end of January, an estimated 2.5 million people were involved.
French company reveals to businesses and brands how they are viewed in the media
May 14, 2009
LexisNexis gives companies in France and elsewhere instant insight into their reputations worldwide.
Your company has a reputation to uphold. And how a company is perceived is among its greatest assets–or liabilities. But these days, globalization and the internet and media explosion has made it nearly impossible to keep abreast of all mentions of your business or your industry, let alone the tenor of the conversations and the effects these media appearances may be having on your corporate image both on its own and vis-a-vis the competition. Especially since these discussions are taking place in multiple languages, across thousands of media outlets and portals worldwide, every minute of every day.
One company in France, LexisNexis, allows businesses to keep current with what’s being said about them, and their competition, across the media landscape around the globe. Press analysis tools provide an aggregate of data from thousands of sources (legal, financial, scientific and more) in multiple languages that paints a clear and current picture of a brand or company’s image. The value of this information analysis is incalculable, especially when the information is not 100% positive. In the case of negative messages or events involving their clients, LexisNexis provides up-to-the-minute risk management. The crucial speed of reaction time to unfavorable messages or events can spell the difference between containment and irreparable damage to a company’s reputation.
LexisNexis Analytics gives companies powerful and easy-to-use tools with which to view and, more importantly, interpret this information constantly flowing in from multiple media sources. The first of these is the LexisNexis Dashboard, a graphical scorecard which measures the number of articles and mentions, compares people or brands, evaluates the positive or negative tenor of discussions around a brand or company, tags the most highly critical articles and the most active sources, offers competitive intelligence, and highlights the issues that come up most often. The LexisNexis Dashboard can be totally customized for each client, allowing them to pick and choose to from all types of sources, in all languages, to create the clearest and most meaningful picture for them. Graphs, histograms and other type of views allow clients to interpret the content and tone of messaging to quickly and decisively determine their own next steps in terms of corporate initiative, risk management and proactive public relations. And because in business, it isn’t only your company’s reputation that matters, Lexis Nexis also provides competitive intelligence tools that let businesses monitor where they and their brands stack up in the competitive landscape.
Where the Dashboard gives an overview and various ways to “keep score” of the number and tone of appearances in media, the LexisNexis Monitor provides another form of press analysis. Monitor allows you to view articles coming in from various information providers in one single tool. These items be supplied by all kinds of sources: press aggregators, web articles, blogs, forums, even client content such as email and databases. Monitor can then create customized RSS feeds based on the client’s evaluation of the most useful sources, and distribute the information to key decision makers.
While these automated tools are immensely powerful in themselves, the greatest value of working with LexisNexis Analytics for your information analysis may be in the experience and expertise of its people. Expert consultants create customized reports in the formats and timings each client needs most, whether it is a weekly news summary, monthly reports, quarterly image studies, or more general strategic analysis. Based on their clients’ parameters, they select the sources to track from an existing library of 60,000 sources; the technology that best corresponds to the objectives and the topics, companies, brands and people to watch, in which languages and geographic areas.
Unless you can read and interpret every newspaper, blog and magazine in the world and watch every TV and web broadcast, you probably would do well to work with LexisNexis Analytics to monitor and optimize your company image. Companies such as Canal + , Pfizer and many more already have, since 1995.
LexisNexis Analytics, founded in 1995,provides real-time and long-term strategic analysis to businesses, offering a services and tools that aggregate and analyse media from over 60,000 sources in multiple languages to allow clients to monitor and better manage their corporate image.

French company innovates in network and telecom technology, integrity
May 5, 2009
Test and measurement software from French ZTI keep companies in 45 countries humming.
A business is only as good as its first failure, and that applies even more strongly to its web technology. You do all you can to drive traffic, but then what? At what point do your systems fail? How much traffic can they handle? Is your bandwidth enough to handle all those orders during a product launch, for example? When does synchronization break down? This is information that is crucial for companies to know, so that they can be prepared, preempt any problems before they occur, and fine-tune the systems they have so that everything is working smoothly and at at optimum capacity. Isn’t it a good idea to stress-test for these things ahead of time in the privacy of your own company, rather than waiting for a real-life failure to teach you those lessons?
ZTI based in Lannion, France, is a leader in telecommunications and Test and Measurement Tools for IP networks. The company was founded in 1989 by engineers and experts who specialize in the development of test and measurement products for telecommunications. ZTI was in the business of designing and developing telecom test products for ISDN and ATM networks before market demand led them to expand into developing IP testing and measurement tools in 1997.
As technology and the Internet have grown exponentially since that time, ZTI has been among the first to develop affordable tools and systems to help companies keep pace and guarantee the integrity of their IP networks. ZTI IP testing and QoS measurement tools can be used in a multitude of situations to test, measure, stress and control IP networks under various conditions.
ZTI has built an expert staff of engineers and consultants who are highly experienced in telecommunications and IT consulting services. And as technology and demand on the network continue to grow, the company has kept ahead of the curve and is always up to date on the latest advances in telecom technologies and changes in the regulatory landscape.
French-based ZTI helps companies all over the world by offering its expertise and providing services and solutions such as custom software development, turnkey Test & Measurement solutions, Test & Measure campaigns and audits, analysis, telecom consulting and GPS synchronization and timing solutions. ZTI counts as its satisfied clients companies as diverse and far-flung as Qantas Airways in Australia, Deutsche Telekom in Germany, Nokia in Finland, Shin Satellite in Thailand, Cisco, USDoJ in the USA and many, many more. Companies in 45 countries count on ZTI for their testing & measurement and telecom support needs. Even institutions of higher education such as the prestigious University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University in the US have used the know-how of ZTI.
ZTI’s GPS synchronization and timing solutions deliver synchronization and reliable, accurate timestamping essential for fields such as security, broadcasting network synchronization and legal services. ZTI’s solutions are relied upon by some of the most serious businesses in the world, namely, armed forces in over ten countries around the globe. High-Precision ZTI Time Service for Windows, UNIX and Linux delivers precision down to one millisecond. Their GPS-based synchronization receivers can synchronize a single PC right up through a complete network of computers and devices.
ZTI offers free trials on all of their testing and measurement tools for IP networks, so customers can “test drive” their best-sellers such as LAN Traffic V2, the powerful traffic generator for IP networks, sample the extra QoS of IP Traffic – Test & Measure, or try out the aptly-named NetDisturb, ZTI’s IP network impairment emulator software that allows simulations of network problems for troubleshooting before any real trouble ever happens. New product available: FaxDisturb, a product to automate fax traffic testing over IP network in a “disturbed” environment, based on the US-manufactured FaxLab from QualityLogic and on ZTI NetDisturb software.
ZTI, founded in 1989, is based in Lanion, France. ZTI is a leader in telecommunications and Test and Measurement Tools for IP networks. The company serves clients on five continents and has offices in the Midi-Pyrenees and in Brittany.

In France, business and pleasure meet at charming hotels equipped for meetings and seminars
May 3, 2009
get a mood-lifting, civilized boost from comfortable accommodations in pleasant settings.
In France, the American notion of the “road warrior”, the business traveller staying in one identical depressing motel after another, eating bad food and wearing his weariness as a badge of honor is as foreign as instant espresso and frozen packaged croissants. Business and pleasure not only coexist in France; the French consider meeting in pleasant settings and sharing good meals a civilized and effective way to foster better business relationships, both within the company and with clients.
Logis hotels, already well-known across France and the rest of Europe as a group of charming hotels with a handy “fireplace” ratings system, now offers business packages at 2,400 of its hotels in France. Whether you’re on the road for business visiting clients or suppliers, or looking to organize an off-site meeting or seminar in pleasant surroundings, Logis has the right hotel for the job.
Combining 3,000 hotels in France in its network, Logis is the largest independent hotel chain in Europe. “Chain” is a bit misleading though, since each hotel in the Logis network is different, many of them charming converted homes, old inns, farmhouses or even mansions. Still, each must adhere to the same demanding Logis quality criteria to be part of the network, guaranteeing guests a certain level of comfort and service no matter which hotel in France they choose.
Choose the right setting for your business seminar in France with Logis hotels.
Whether you prefer rural countryside, the mountains, the seaside or the city as a backdrop for your meeting or seminar, Logis has a charming hotel that will offer the ideal setting for your off-site business events and activities. Certain of these hotels are classified as Seminaires au Vert hotels, where you’ll have a special liason offering personalized services that will help you get organized and make your meeting or event a success. In each of these hotels, you’ll find quality services at competitive prices in a hotel with charm and originality. Everything in these hotels has been thought through for the business traveler and seminar planner, from the comfortable conference rooms to the high-performance business equipment that will be put at your disposal, including a projector, paperboard, extension cords, Internet access, copiers, printers and anything else you might need. The hotel staff will be ready to help you trouble-shoot any problems that might arise, and will do everything necessary to make both your meeting and your stay as pleasant and smooth as possible. Your Logis liason will propose ideas for breaks and leisure activities to help you relax with your colleagues and clients during your business stay.
And since in France there is no better way to bond than over good food and drink, many Logis hotels boast gourmet restaurants where you’ll be able to entertain your staff and clients over delicious dinners of regional specialties, prepared with the freshest local ingredients by accomplished chefs. Of course, to “seal the deal” you’ll have a range of good wines to choose from to accompany your meal.
Holding your meeting or seminar in France at a Logis business hotel will show you that productivity and pleasure don’t have to be mutually exclusive. In fact, with the goodwill, good relationships and good memories you create, it may be one of the smartest business decisions you will ever make.
